Well... JUNE 06 MONTHLY CHALLENGE

I have not gotten any submissions for this months game. Oh well.

Previous winners
April ’06 Riley McArdle Quarter Pickup
May ’06 Unclaimed Egg Pickup

Next months challenge.
You still have three hours. And the first person after the three hour window to send a submission automatically wins.

Balloon Popper

You must pop a balloon at least the size of a soccer ball.
You can only use vex parts.
The balloon can only be supported on one side, no trapping it in the corner of a room.
You must start at least 1 foot from the balloon.
You must do it in less than 20 seconds.
Everything else is legal.
I guess technically you can sharpen a peice of metal and pop it, but thats kind of cheap, so if someone figures out a different way to do it they will most likely win.

Annoucements

For the monthly challenges, robot of the weeks, or just for coolness sake, if you want to send me a video that would be great! Then I can put it up on here so everybody can see their robot in action. Wether or not you have a video will not be a determining factor in the judging, but it will add i-think-you-are-cool points. Get those submissions in. For those of you who don't know the monthly challenge, you should find an earlier post with all the rules. The basics, you have to pick up an egg, you can't trap it against a wall or anything else besides parts of the robot, the closest part of the robot must start at least 6 inches away, you must do it in less then five seconds. The egg may not be cracked. The egg must be at least three feet from anything except for the robot. The Next month's game hint is

"Newton's Third Law"

More Videos

So here is a video of the holonomic robot, Strafe. I apologize for the duality of the video, I was checking to see which music was better. Anyway, its pretty cool. Remember, two days left! And I have no submissions for robot of the week.

Long time no type. Anyway, my friend Nathan and I are competing, along with the rest of the Stuyvesant VEX Club, in a June 10th competition. It placing empty cans into a bucket. Here is our bot. We have zipties attached to the treads creating a conveyer belt. I'll put up some pictures of the competition later. Wish us luck! May is coming to a close, and I still don't have any submissions. Vex Segway Robot of the Week

My friend Nathan built this. He didn't go into detail about it so I can only guess from what I see from the picture but here goes. The ultrasonic sensors measure distance from the ground so when one is too high (or too low) and/or the other is vice versa it backs up or goes forward accordingly. This definatley gets the ROTW prize. Congratulations Nathan!

Well thats good

First of all some great news!

They have decided to continue VEX.

Second of all, my site is up! http://bixler.rassi.ath.cx/ . Eventually this site will be switched to my domain, nathanbixler.com. My friend is putting up a server, should be up sometime in the late summer. Eventually I will switch this to that site on my friends server. Until then, I will continue with this.

Changes

I'm going to be experimenting with the HTML for a couple days, but I'll change it back to normal, don't worry. I'm just giving you guys a heads up.

THANKS!

I got some very helpful replies in dealing with my problem. I have another question. Can someone email me the html code that will allow me to have a link linked to an image as opposed to words? So Instead of VexLabs being the link I could have a Baseball bat instead. I'm not going to do that, but I'm still interested.

Tags

Someone posted a comment saying I should add a RSS or an ATOM tag on my blog. If anybody could send me an email telling me how to do this I would greatly appreciate it.

nathan.bixler@gmail.com

Thanks.

ROTW

Remember, I'm interested in having this represent as many creations as possible, not just my own. I do have a robot of the week award, so send in your pictures. Don't be embarressed. I am going to try to get this up to an actual website, www.nathanbixler.com, but that may not be for a while so...

Anyway, send in those pics!

Further Explanation

I have several requests for the monthly challenges.
Please include as much of the following information as you feel you want to. First Name, Last Name, Location, Age, How long you've been with robotics, etc.

You must include a technical description and a picture of your robot.

If you are able to do it in autonomous mode you get bonus points. If I am given two robots, one that does the task in autonomous, and the other doesn't, unless the non autonomous one rocks my socks, and the autonomous one doesn't, the autonomous one will probably win. But please, build a robot that can do it without autonomous first. Don't bite off more than you can chew.

April 06 Monthly Challenge Winner

We have a winner. Riley McArdle sent me a picture of his robot.

"The two angled long bars sticking out the front guide the quarter towards the two spinning intake rollers. The long bars are also hinged so they are always in contact with the ground.

Most of the time, the intake rollers either slide or flip the coin up onto the plate (beneath the motor that spins the intake rollers). The plate is hinged in the back so that it drags along the ground in the front."

He also sent me a link to a VEX message board he just started. It looks awesome, so I strongly urge everybody to take a look. Congratulations to our first winner.
Remember the new challenge is out.

May 06 Monthly Challenge

Well nobody sent me any emails, and I checked my spam folder, so there is no winner for April's challenge. However, somebody can still win it, <-- the first person to send me an email with a picture of a robot that looks like it might be able to do it. Remember, send it to my email adress nathan.bixler@gmail.com .

Anyway, for this months challenge, (and I promise that this is the last challenge for a while that involves picking stuff up), you must pick up an egg.

The Rules

You must do it in under 5 seconds.
The closest you may start from the egg must be 6 inches.
You may not crack the egg.
You may not trap the egg against a wall, chair, step, etc. The egg must be at least three feet from anything except for the robot.

Get those emails into me. And the April 06 Monthly Challenge is still available.

June 10th Competition

My friend Nathan and I were invited to a competition on June 10th.

Here is the link to the game.

If you live around here, come and watch and look for us.
